KUALA LUMPUR: Umno is still relevant to the Malays as it got the largest share of the popular vote among this group in GE14, said Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

Cooperating with PAS will make Barisan Nasional even more popular as the coalition pulled 46% of the Malay support in the GE14 while PAS got 28%, she claimed.

The Umno Supreme Council member said Pakatan Harapan settled for only 26% of the Malay votes and had won on non-Malay votes.

In GE14, Barisan only got 2.4% of the Chinese votes while Pakatan got 93% and for Indian votes, Barisan obtained only 26% compared to Pakatan’s 63%, said Azalina.

“This means that in 2018 we lost not because of Malay votes but non-Malay votes.

“This concludes that Umno still has the support of the Malays and is still strong.

“We cannot consider ourselves as being defeated, we didn't lose,” she said in her winding up speech at the Puteri Umno meeting during the Umno General Assembly 2018 here on Saturday (Sept 26).

It was Umno’s popularity that prompted its rivals to attempt to finish off the party, said Azalina, who is also Pengerang MP.

“They start by cutting off the heads of the leaders, then they cut off the body and the limbs. But the struggle must go on even if there’s only one person left,” she said.

In urging Puteri Umno to take to social media to fight slander and misconceptions about Umno, Azalina said Barisan lost due to two main reasons: fear and fake news.

She said the Barisan government put the Anti-Fake News Act 2018 to protect the people from the menace of fake news and the dangers of social media.

“A country can fall because of fake news. It was evident in at the Arab Spring. Social media is a machinery used by the enemy,” she said.

She also hit out at turncoat elected Umno representatives, saying that they left with no dignity as they did not let go of the positions that they won using the party ticket.

Other than fighting fake news on social media, Azalina also urged Puteri Umno to strategise to attract more young women into its fold.

Meanwhile, Puteri Umno chief Datuk Zahida Zarik Khan asked the members to hold on to their 5S battlecry (Solidarity, Synergy, Survival, Sukarela (Volunteerism), and Strategy) as well as have the mindset of the opposition.
