No issue in Daim meeting Umno MPs, says Anwar

PETALING JAYA: There is nothing wrong in Tun Daim Zainuddin meeting Umno MPs, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in response to allegations that the Council of Eminent Persons (CEP) chairman was conducting secret meetings to pull them into Pakatan Harapan.

"If Daim meets Umno MPs, there's nothing wrong with that.

"I bumped into two of them at the airport. I asked them how they were and also if they still wanted to be in Umno.

"I also have frequent meetings with Daim. I don't think this should be an issue to create tension between us.

"The problem is that there is said to be a conspiracy to bring over all of Umno. Those are interpretations that I don't even bother with," Anwar said at a press conference here on Friday (Sept 21).

The PKR president-elect added that he had faith in Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the latter had given him strong support and cooperation.

On the possibilities that Umno MPs or those who had left the party might join Pakatan component parties, Anwar said it would be discussed when they applied.

On Tuesday (Sept 18), Jeli MP and former International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed left Umno, saying that the party's direction was no longer in line with the political principles he upheld.

Less than 24 hours later, Kimanis MP and former Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman also resigned from Umno.
