Health Ministry: More alcohol poisoning cases in Perak

KUALA LUMPUR: New cases of suspected methanol poisoning have now been reported in Perak, says the Health Ministry.

There were five new cases reported in Perak on Thursday (Sept 20), while Selangor reported seven new cases and Kuala Lumpur reported two, said Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah (pic).

In total, the Health Ministry had received 69 notifications of suspected methanol poisoning from government health facilities from Sept 15 to 20. Besides the five cases from Perak, Selangor has a total of 55 cases and Kuala Lumpur, nine.

The number of deaths remain at 21, with 16 from Selangor, Kuala Lumpur (three) and Perak (two).

"The ministry has received confirmed methanol poisoning from blood test results for eight cases in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur" said Dr Noor Hisham in a statement on Thursday (Sept 20), adding that the tests from the cases in Perak have not been confirmed yet.

From the 69 suspected methanol poisoning cases, he said 12 involve Malaysians (with six deaths) while the balance involved foreigners.

As it stand the number of cases, according to nationality are: Nepal (27 cases with five deaths); Myanmar (19 cases with eight deaths); Bangladesh (nine cases, one death); Indonesia (one case, no deaths) and one death of unknown nationality.

The ministry, through the Food Safety and Quality Division is continuing with its enforcement efforts, he said.

Drinks that are suspected of causing the cases of alcohol poisoning are Grand Royal Whisky, Mandalay Whisky, Joker Whisky as well as Kingfisher and Volcano beers, he said.

As of Sept 20, as many as 68 premises selling alcoholic drinks had been checked and 647 bottles of alcoholic drinks of various brands (including the brands mentioned) had been confiscated as they were found to have failed to adhere to the Food Act 1983 and Food Regulations 1985.
