Grand Royal Group assures beverage is of highest quality, in light of mass alcohol poisoning

PETALING JAYA: In light of the suspected alcohol poisoning case which has claimed 21 lives, Grand Royal Group public relations manager Hla Myat Thu in a statement on Thursday (Sept 20) assured all customers that their products are of the highest quality and conforms to all international standards.

The Grand Royal Group is the company behind Grand Royal Whiskey.

“We will work hand in hand with the authorities to find out the truth of the incident, if any help is needed,” Hla said. "We would also like to expresses our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones involved."

The statement was released following a suspected alcohol poisoning case in the Klang Valley starting Tuesday (Sept 18), which left more than 50 drinkers affected and 21 dead.

The Group has up to date ISO standard of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) and The Quality Management System - ISO 9001:2015, said Hla. 

The Group said that in 2014, there has been counterfeit Grand Royal products available in Malaysia, and that it does not enjoy the sole proprietary naming rights to the name “Grand Royal” in Malaysia.

A Health Ministry statement on Tuesday (Sept 18) said that the victims had consumed Mandalay Whiskey, Kingfisher Beer and Grand Royal Whiskey bought from shops in the Klang Valley on Monday (Sept 17).

An analysis of the three brand samples showed that only the Grand Royal Whiskey was found to contain methanol and did not adhere to the Food Act.

The victims include Malaysians (five), Nepalese (22), Myanmar nationals (15), Bangladeshis (nine), India nationals (two), Indonesian (one) and one whose nationality is unknown.
