KOTA KINABALU: A family’s planned picnic at the beach turned into a nightmare when they met with an accident which resulted in the death of three children.
It was supposed to be a bonding time for the family and their relatives as they headed for a picnic in the northern Pitas district yesterday morning.
The family of seven was heading to the Terunggu Beach when the driver lost control of the pickup truck they were travelling in and crashed into a car.
Apart from the children who died, four others were injured.
The vehicle overturned and trapped the victims in the 10.30am accident.
Some of them were at the back carriage.
Sabah Fire and Rescue Department operations chief Khatizah Rahaban said the three children were Loris Lorzen, seven, Lisrerealcka Hamadus, nine, and Sizon Januin, nine.
The injured have been identified as Larryko Laitin, 25, Jazzy, five, Nena Muijan, 22, and Aaron Gaman, nine.
“All victims have been taken to the Pitas Hospital for treatment and those killed, for a post-mortem,” she said.
In Ipoh, a father and son died after being flung out of a trailer they were travelling in as it plunged into a ravine along Jalan Pengkalan Hulu-Gerik in Pengkalan Hulu, about 170km from the city.
Driver Sharul Anuar Abdul Hamid, 46, and his son Mohd Ikhmal, 20, both from Kuala Kedah, died at the scene during the 9.15am incident yesterday.
The trailer transporting rice husk fell 50m down the cliff. The two men landed on the road shoulder and died.
According to Pengkalan Hulu OCPD Deputy Supt Raduan Mohamad, the driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle.
A team of firemen rushed to the scene and helped retrieve the vehicle.
The bodies have been sent to Gerik Hospital for a post-mortem.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
