KUALA TERENGGANU: It’s only natural that some PAS party members are uncomfortable as the party gets more friendly with long-time rival Umno, but the Islamist party’s deputy president believes there is nothing to worry about.
The PAS deputy president acknowledged concerns expressed by some party members who feel that PAS should not act as a "lifesaver" to corrupt politicians.
“Let me stress that we are not merely lifesavers, but we will represent Islam in saving them from further displeasing God.
“We will lead them to the right path,” he said in his winding-up speech at the 64th PAS annual Muktamar (general assembly) on Sunday (Sept 16).
It was noted that some PAS members and supporters were wary of the new relationship, with a representative of the PAS Supporters’ wing saying that the party should not shelter any corrupt individuals.
"What is wrong is wrong, and wrongdoers must be punished. We don't have to sympathise with such people," said Lau Chin Chua of the PAS supporter's wing.
In closing his speech, Tuan Ibrahim said he hopes the Muktamar will bring party members closer as PAS makes early preparations to face the 15th general election.
“We will keep up the fight until God grants us victory, whether it is a temporary one on earth or a permanent one in the afterlife,” he said.
