KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says he plans to meet with Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik over the latter's appointment as International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) president.

The PKR president-elect said he will meet with the academician turned minister next week to offer some advice regarding the controversy.

"He (Maszlee) is a good academician with abilities although a few of his decisions has given rise to some negative views.

"I think this can be rectified through dialogue.

"I will meet him next week so that this can be made right," he said when addressing a youth dialogue and book launch titled A People' s History of Malaysia authored by Dr Syed Husin Ali on Sunday (Sept 16).

Maszlee's appointment has drawn a storm of controversy with student activists holding protests to demand he relinquish his post.

Several civil society groups have also expressed their concern over the appointment, which they claim is at odds with Pakatan Harapan's pledge to avoid political appointments.

Maszlee had since defended his appointment, saying he had been tasked to return the university back to its past glory.
