SEREMBAN: The PKR polls can no longer be postponed as the party has already been given an extension by the Registrar of Societies to defer it previously, says secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
He said the party election must continue as scheduled.
"The term of the current leadership expires in November.
"Since we have been given one extension, we cannot postpone it another time," he told reporters at an e-voting briefing for party members on Friday (Sept 14).
He was responding to PKR vice-president Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin’s proposal to put the party election on hold until the Port Dickson by-election is concluded.
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is contesting the seat, had also said there was no need to postpone the PKR election to make way for the impending by-election.
He said this was because the candidates gunning for posts in PKR have had ample opportunity to canvass support from the grassroots.
The PKR election is scheduled to be held at all levels nationwide from Sept 22 until Oct 28.
Saifuddin said members can still help out to campaign when the by-election is held.
"Since the PKR elections will be held in stages, we will still have members from the respective states helping out.
"In short, we will have no shortage of members helping out during campaigning in PD," he added.
