BALAKONG: The Election Commission (EC) will re-evaluate whether the practice of having a campaign period of up to 21 days is appropriate.
EC secretary Datuk Mohamed Elias Abu Bakar said it had received various reactions to the Balakong and Seri Setia by-elections, which had the longest campaign period in the country’s history.
“During the Sungai Kandis by-election, we gave 14 days. For these two by-elections, we fixed 21 days of campaigning.
“We will reassess to find a more suitable time frame and after getting feedback from contesting candidates and parties,” he told reporters after visiting SJK(C) Balakong, one of the polling centres for the Balakong by-election.
The by-election was held following the death of its incumbent Eddie Ng Tien Chee in a road accident on July 20.
On the course of the campaigning, Mohamed Elias said the EC had yet to receive any report of election offences or violation. — Bernama
