BALAKONG: The proposal to raise the daily allowance for assemblymen who attend sittings is an insult to Selangor residents, elected representatives and the institution of the state assembly itself, said MCA by-election candidate Tan Chee Teong (pic).
“This proposal to raise the allowance from RM75 to as high as RM500 may be a motivation for the assemblymen to attend the sittings, but it will be a burden to taxpayers,” he said.
Moreover, he added, it was the duty of assemblymen to be present at the state assembly.
Commenting on reports in Chinese media that attributed the proposal to Selangor Speaker Ng Suee Lim, Tan said if assemblymen could not fulfil such an obligation, their allowances should instead be slashed as a penalty.
Tan said he hoped his Pakatan Harapan opponent Wong Siew Ki, along with other Pakatan and opposition representatives, would reject the Speaker’s suggestion.
What was needed, he said, was a change in the assemblymen’s attitude.
Former three-term Seri Kembangan assemblyman Datuk Liew Yuen Keong also voiced his objection to the allowance suggestion.
He expressed dissatisfaction with the new batch of assemblymen, saying that fewer questions were being submitted for the current meeting compared to previous sessions.
