Over 20,000 take part in Penang Starwalk


GEORGE TOWN: More than 20,000 participants gathered as early as 6am on Sunday (Sept 2) for the annual Penang Starwalk event.

The huge crowd was in high spirits as they converged on the popular seafront promenade of Gurney Drive in front of Gurney Paragon Mall.

At 7am, the participants were flagged off by Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas, who was also accompanied by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and state Youth and Sports committee chairman Soon Lip Chee.

Sharing the stage were also Penang Starwalk 2018 chairman Simone Liong, Star Media Group Berhad executive editor Rozaid Abdul Rahman, YTL Corporation Berhad executive director Datuk Yeoh Soo Keng, Hunza Group managing director Datuk Khor Siang Gin and Penang Amateur Athletics Association (PAAA) president Datuk Syed Mohd Aidid Syed Murtaza.

The 7km non-competitive walk took participants to Jalan Tanjung Tokong and Jalan Seri Tanjung Pinang before heading back to the mall via Jalan Tanjung Tokong.

Penang Starwalk 2018 is organised by Star Media Group Bhd.

Its platinum sponsor is YTL Communications Sdn Bhd.

The US Department of Agriculture is the gold sponsor while Eastern & Oriental Bhd, F&N Beverages Marketing Sdn Bhd, Ewein Zenith Sdn Bhd and Wiitrac Elevator Sdn Bhd are the silver sponsors.

The official venue provider is Gurney Paragon Mall.
