GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) will embark on a RM4.3mil project to ease traffic congestion along the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway during peak hours.
Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Daniel Gooi said the project would include a paired U-turn at the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway-Jalan Sungai Pinang-Lebuh Sungai Pinang junction to enable road users to turn back without passing the traffic lights along Lebuh Sungai Pinang.
“Works are expected to commence next month and will take about a year to complete.
“The open tender was called in June and the project is now undergoing the tender valuation.
“The RM4.3mil project includes widening the road to make a third lane, upgrading the traffic light system and constructing the drainage,” he said during a press conference at the Sungai Pinang Food Court.
Gooi also said the project would benefit residents in Pengkalan Kota and Sungai Pinang.
“Although this project is in the Sungai Pinang area, it will benefit those in Pengkalan Kota too. This dedicated U-turn will cut down the traffic volume.
“The project is a short-term measure to address traffic congestion. The long-term traffic solution for Penangites is the Penang Transport Master Plan,” he said.
Sungai Pinang assemblyman Lim Siew Khim said the dedicated U-turn would benefit more than 10,000 people living in Bandar Sri Pinang.
