PETALING JAYA: Bentong MP Wong Tack is being accused of staying mum on an environmental issue involving the use of cyanide in gold mining.
Pahang MCA Youth secretary Quek Tai Seong claimed Wong was too quiet when Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister Dr Xavier Jayakumar said the use of the chemical in gold mining had no effect on the health of nearby residents.
He said Wong had worn the cape of a “champion of the environment” and had for many years actively participated in anti-pollution movements such as cyanide gold mining in Raub.
“Unfortunately, after he was elected into office, he seemed to be outfitted with a totally different brain.
“When Dr Xavier claimed in Parliament that there is no scientific proof that cyanide gold mining is harmful, Wong did not emit so much as a squeak to protest,” Quek said in a statement.
Quek also claimed that Wong, who is also chairman of Himpunan Hijau, had slandered MCA unfairly in the past.
“At the time, he had linked MCA to the cyanide gold mining without any concrete evidence, accusing the party of not caring about the health of locals and the environment,” said Quek.
To rile up voters’ sentiments and tarnish MCA’s name, he said Wong had melodramatically questioned if former Bentong MP Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai wanted someone to die before acknowledging that the mining was detrimental to human health.
“Wong must issue a public apology for this act of defamation against MCA and resign for his misdeed of lying to the rakyat,” he said.
