PUTRAJAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad wants the Malaysian contingent to repeat its successful outing at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou by emerging among the top 10 nations in the medal tally at the Indonesia Asian Games.
The Prime Minister said if the team could do it back in 2010, "I don't see why we can't repeat it in 2018.
"I am confident that our contingent can record success that is even more meaningful.
" I believe all of you can do it because you have trained hard for this," he said at a ceremony to hand over the Jalur Gemilang to the Malaysian contingent competing in the Asian Games on Friday (Aug 10).
Malaysia was at 10th place during the Games in 2010 after winning nine gold medals. Team Malaysia took home five golds at the Asian Games in Incheon in 2014.
Dr Mahathir pointed out that Malaysia too have world-class athletes in Al Jufferi Jamari (silat), Azizulhasni Awang (cyclist) and Wong Weng Soon (wushu).
"Go to the Games with strong fighting spirit and determination to make Malaysia shine in the world arena.
" On behalf of the Government and Cabinet, we wish all of you the best. Make us proud," he added.
The Asian Games will be held from Aug 18 to Sept 2.
