ALOR SETAR (Bernama): A total of 15,000 Kedah domestic water consumers who are registered with the National Poverty Data Bank (e-Kasih) will enjoy exemption from water charges up to a maximum consumption of 20 cubic metres.
State Public Works, Water Supply, Water Resources and Energy Committee chairman Zamri Yusuf said the exemption had been reduced from 220,000 consumers to 15,000 deserving users.
“Earlier, the exemption was given to all consumers using less than 20 cubic metres of water even though most of them could afford to pay.
“After studying it for two months, we found the assistance did not meet its intended objective to help those who really could not afford it.
“So from Aug 1, water exemption worth RM10 will only be given to those registered with e-Kasih managed by the Welfare Department (JKM),” he said after a gotong-royong (self-help) programme at Pantai Johor here Friday.
On Nov 12, 2017, the then Menteri Besar of Kedah, Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah, announced water charge exemptions amounting to RM10 for domestic consumers in Kedah starting from January 2018.Zamri said the state government would be undertaking a subsidy of RM150,000 a month to Syarikat Air Darul Aman and the amount was far lower than RM1.5mil a month it had to shoulder earlier. – Bernama
