MyRapid hears inventive excuses from those misusing concession cards

KUALA LUMPUR: Some inventive methods and excuses were seen and heard from users caught misusing MyRapid concession cards at public transportation services by Prasarana Sdn Bhd.

Cases included those who attached a regular Touch n Go to the concession card or even tampered with the concession cards by replacing the users’ picture.

One said it was their first time using another’s card, while most said they had misplaced their regular cards and had ‘borrowed’ the cards from friends and family.

About 18 cases of misuse were discovered in just one hour during a joint operation at the MRT Muzium Negara station by officers from Prasarana, the Land Transportation Agency (SPAD) and the police on Wednesday (July 25).

Prasarana Malaysia Bhd president and group chief executive officer Masnizam Hisham said the operation was an attempt at enforcement and deterring such cases.

“We need to be firm to ensure so that we can collect the fare costs that we are entitled in order to maintain operational costs,” she said.

The concession cards allow its users to enjoy a 50% discount on fare costs at any Rapid KL service including MRT, LRT and bus.

Masnizam said those who were caught would have the cards confiscated and the registered user would be permanently blacklisted.

“We also lodge police reports against the user and owner of the card ,” she added.

Action was taken under Section 206 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010 for fraud.

Prasarana estimates that thousand of Ringgit was lost in revenue each day due to the misuse.

Prasarana recorded 1,318 cases of abuse of concession cards between November 2017 until July 14 this year.

Misuse of student concession cards were the highest recorded with 1,015 cases, while those holding senior citizen and OKU cards were recorded at 271 and 32 respectively.

About 230,000 concessions cards have been issued with more than half student concession cards.
