KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s largest shopping centre– 1Borneo Hypermall – may be forced to shut down if they are unable to reach an agreement with Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) on their unpaid electric bill of over RM8mil.

According to a statement issued by the mall management - 1Borneo Management Corporation Sdn Bhd (1BMC) -  negotiations with SESB on their outstanding bills were ongoing.
We have two authorised personnel in charge of this matter who are negotiating with SESB on the proposed settlement plan for our outstanding bills,” 1BMC said.

The statement added that negotiations included the reconnection of electricity supply to the mall, as it is now functioning without air-conditioning following a partial power cut by SESB.

The management said that they have submitted a final proposed settlement plan to SESB on July 16, and were awaiting response from the latter.

“If 1BMC is unable to reach an amicable settlement with SESB, 1Borneo Hypermall may be forced to shut down,” 1BMC said.

The management also denied allegations of any bribery attempt on their part to "settle" their issues with SESB.

The management said that any dealings by any staff other than the two authorised SESB personnel were considered not legal.

1BMC stated that "any communications" with SESB which was not done in the presence of the two authorised representatives, is not authorised by the management and they are not liable for it.

“In abundance of caution, we urge that any party dealing with our management to request for an authorisation letter from the any individual for verification purposes, before dealing with the individual,” 1BMC added.

The management also advised SESB to not deal with any individual without proper authorisation documents from the 1BMC.

The management owes more than RM8mil of electric bills to SESB.
