Some of the suspected drug addicts arrested in Kedah on July 16.

ALOR SETAR : A whole family of five, all believed to be drug addicts, were using their home at a village in Kedah as a drug lair.

Four siblings, including a single mother with a son, were detained yesterday (July 16) by the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) but the father managed to escape.

They had been using their house at Kampung Carok Machang, Kuala Ketil, Kedah as a drug addicts' lair.

In the raid, codenamed Ops Cegah, which was launched at 1.00am, the four siblings, aged between 18 to 28, were arrested.

However, their 40-something father, who is believed to be a drug addict, managed to escape the raid. The man is also the grandfather of a 3-year-old boy.

Baling AADK chief  Mohamad Nasir Md Radzi said the five in the family were all believed to be abusing an opiate (a drug with morphine-like effects, derived from opium) and methamphetamine (syabu) for the last two to three years.

The five in the family comprises the father and his three sons, aged 18, 23 and 28, and his 21-year-old daughter, who is the single mother of the 3-year-old boy.

The four siblings, who are jobless, used their house as a drug lair and their activities had caused anxiety among villagers and had disturbed public order in the village.

Theft cases have also risen in the surrounding area of the village.

Mohamad Nasir said all of them were brought back to Baling AADK for urine tests, and the results were all positive.

“They were detained at the AADK Detention Centre and the case will be investigated under Section 3(1) of Drug Addicts Act 1983 (Amendment 1998),” he said.

He said five other drug addicts, aged 18 to 30, were also arrested in Ops Cegah, which began at 9.30pm Monday (July 16) till 2.00am Tuesday (July 17).

The operation covered various areas of Kedah around Kuala Ketil, Kampung Carok Machang, Kampung Ketemba and Kampung Bukit Tinggi in Kupang.

Four of them tested positive of morphine and syabu abuse, while another one tested negative and was released later, he said.

“All of them were detained at the Baling AADK Detention Centre and will be investigated under the same section of the act,” added Mohamad Nasir.
