PETALING JAYA: Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) is questioning Pakatan Harapan's excuse for keeping asset declaration private, saying it would defeat the entire purpose of ministers declaring their assets.
“What’s the use of declaration of assets if it is not public,” PSM secretary-general Sivarajan said in a statement Monday (July 16).
He slammed Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu's support of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's proposal for ministers to declare their assets only to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and not to the public, calling it a “disappointing statement” from “an ex-opposition firebrand”.
“It has been our principle that all aspiring election candidates, all elected MPs, state assemblymen and even local councillors, declare their assets to the public,” Sivarajan said.
“Assets need to be declared and monitored annually, as PSM’s former MP Dr Jeyakumar has done every year during his term so that the public could monitor any accumulation of wealth during his term,” he added.
Sivarajan said Pakatan Harapan should fulfil its promises sincerely, and urged the Government to get elected representatives to declare their assets publicly if they are sincere in their reform agenda.
