Wanita MCA: Child marriages need to be banned, no need for an ‘SOP’

PETALING JAYA: MCA has slammed Putrajaya's proposal to implement a standard operating procedure (SOP) to screen marriages involving minors, lambasting it as a far cry from banning child marriages.

"This SOP for child marriage proposal is not an outright move to amend acts of parliament and state enactments to prevent underage nuptials, but appears to be a loophole to still enable legalised betrothals for minors," said Wanita MCA chairman Datuk Heng Seai Kie (pic).
