PETALING JAYA: A message warning the public not to go out of their homes past midnight to turn off running taps for fear of being robbed by lurking criminals is making its round on social media.
The viral message claimed that recent cases had been detected in Petaling Jaya and Selangor.
Bukit Aman's Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department director Comm Datuk Tajudin Md Isa said while the police were not aware of such recent cases, it is also good for the public to take precaution.
"We cannot dismiss the message entirely so I urge the public to be careful.
"We must remain vigilant as crime can occur anytime," he said when contacted on Saturday (July 7).
Comm Tajudin said the safety and security of the public is always the police's priority but at the same time, the people must play their part in not creating opportunities for criminals to strike.
"If you see any suspicious individuals in your neighbourhood or even hear of any crime in your area, contact the police as soon as possible.
"There are multiple ways to contact the police, including via phone and smartphone applications," he added.
One of the latest ways is through the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) app for the public to report about crimes in their surroundings.
Comm Tajudin said the public can download the free VSP application at the Gallery of Malaysian Government Mobile Applications (GAMMA) website.
