PUTRAJAYA: Former minister Tan Sri Rais Yatim has called for the dismantling of companies involved in issuing visas to Chinese tourists and foreign students.
Rais, who was invited to speak at the Immigration Department’s monthly assembly here yesterday, said such companies took power away from the Immigration Department director-general.
“I am aware of a company based in Beijing.
“We can do the work, but that company got the job of issuing visas for 178 yuan (RM107).
“I recommend that the higher authorities close this company,” Rais said to applause from Immigration Department personnel.
He added that the company had raked in profits for long enough and could even set up the same operation in India and other countries.
“Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s pelan pembaharuan (reform plan) should be supported and bodies such as these must go,” he said.
Rais also said the people wanted to see the return of such powers to the department.
“He (the director-general) has the power to deny or allow entry of people into the country.
“Now someone else is allowing people in and three months down the road, the students might not be studying in universities,” he said.
