JOHOR BARU: A government engineer who allegedly got a free smartphone and RM1,400 from a contractor was charged with corruption at the Sessions Court here.

The accused, Zainuddin Ibrahim, 55, was charged with two corruption offences in front of Sessions Judge Kamarudin Kamsun here on Monday (July 2).

Zainuddin, who is a Public Works Department (JKR) assistant engineer, pleaded not guilty.

In the first charge, he was accused of receiving a smartphone for free from a contractor, whom he knew has an influence on his duty as a JKR officer.

The accused allegedly committed the offence at Jalan Pintas along Seelong-Ulu Tebrau in Kulai at around 1pm on April 16, 2016.

In the second charge, Zainuddin allegedly received RM1,400 from the same contractor at the same location in May 2016.

He was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code for both offences, which carries a two-year jail term or a fine or both upon conviction.

Section 165 is an offence where a public servant accepts any valuable thing, without adequate payment from any person whom he knows is likely to be involved in any proceeding connected with his official functions.

Kamarudin set RM10,000 as bail and Aug 6 for case management.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) prosecution officer Norsyarina Raizan prosecuted the case while lawyer Azrul Zulkifli Stork represented the accused.
