IPOH: The Umno polls in Perak saw nine new division chairmen being elected on Saturday (June 30).
The biggest shock was Tapah division deputy chief Isham Shahruddin defeating incumbent Datuk Samsudin Abu Hassan, who is also Ayer Kuning assemblyman.
In Kampar, former deputy chairman Datuk Abd Rahman Md Som won a four-cornered fight against Syed Aminuddin Syed Nordin, Zaidi Kamal Mohd Hashim and M. Kamil Bidin.
Its former division chief Datuk Mohammed Radzi Manan quit the party after his daughter Tualang Sekah assemblyman Datuk Nolee Ashilin Mohd Radzi did the same in support of Pakatan Harapan to form the state government.
For the Bukit Gantang division, deputy chairman and Kuala Sepetang assemblyman Mohd Kamaruddin Abu Bakar will be the acting chief until the next party polls.
Its former chairman and Bukit Gantang MP, Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal, quit the party earlier this week, though he won uncontested.
According to a party member, a re-election was not possible as the date to submit nomination forms have long closed.
In Tambun, Datuk Aminuddin Md Hanafiah was elected as the new division chief.
He was formerly the acting chief after Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah resigned from all party posts in 2016.
The other new chiefs included Larut MP Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (Larut), Bukit Chandan assemblyman Maslin Sham Razman (Kuala Kangsar) and Datuk Dr Azhar Ahmad (Beruas).
Two others, Datuk Mohd Nizar Zakaria (Parit) and Datuk Hang Tuah Din (Gopeng), won uncontested.
Meanwhile, newly elected Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and former Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir won uncontested in Bagan Datuk and Lumut respectively.
The others who also won uncontested were Datuk Hasbullah Osman (Gerik), Datuk Ahmad Shalimin Ahmad Shaffie (Taiping), Datuk Seri Mohd Nazri Aziz (Padang Rengas), Datuk Mohd Zolkafly Harun (Sungai Siput), Datuk Azian Osman (Ipoh Timur), Datuk Mohd Yusoff Kassim (Batu Gajah), Datuk Tajuddin Abdul Rahman (Pasir Salak) and Datuk Mohd Azhar Jamaluddin (Teluk Intan).
The incumbents who successfully defended their seats included Datuk Saarani Mohamad (Lenggong), Datuk Khusairi Abdul Talib (Tanjung Malim), Datuk Abu Bakar Md Ali (Parit Buntar), Datuk Sham Mat Sahat (Bagan Serai) and Datuk Shamsuddin Abd Ghaffar (Ipoh Barat).
