Opening up a can of worms
PETALING JAYA: The Health Ministry has issued an order to pull TL Tan Lung, TLC, Cinta, Sea Fresh and HS Brand’s canned sardines from the shelves following the discovery of worms that could cause anisakiasis disease in the samples checked.
Similarly, King Cup, Bintang and TC Boy’s canned mackerel in tomato sauce also have to be recalled for having the same Filum Nematoda worms from the genus Anisakis spp.
“The health risk is actually pretty low because the worms are already dead due to the cooking or canning process,” Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said.
His statement came after the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services (MAQIS) found worms in samples of canned sardines from China in two containers which entered Malaysia through the North Butterworth Container Terminal in Penang on May 14.
MAQIS director-general Datuk Mokhtaruddin Husain said the anisakiasis disease occurs when humans eat seafood infected with the Anisakis spp parasite.
The worms attack the gastrointestinal system such as the stomach of humans and can cause gastrointestinal problems.
