KOTA BARU: A rubber tapper was sentenced to 16 years' jail and 10 strokes of the rotan for raping his stepdaughter.

Sessions Court judge Ahmad Bazli Bahruddin imposed the sentence on Monday (June 25) after the 49-year-old man pleaded guilty to raping the 14-year-old last month.

The rubber tapper was charged with raping her at a house in Kuala Krai at 8.30pm on May 27.

He was charged under Section 376 (3) of the Penal Code.

The sentence starts from the date of his arrest on June 17.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Hajar Alias pressed for stiffer penalty because the accused was supposed to protect his ward, and not strip away her dignity.

The accused, which was not represented, had earlier pleaded for a lighter sentence, on grounds that he was a breadwinner.
