SANDAKAN: Rear Admiral Datuk Ganesh Navaratnam has taken over as the navy’s Naval Region Two (Mawilla 2) commander.

He takes over from Rear Admiral Datuk Abdul Rahman Ayob following a handover ceremony here yesterday.

Ganesh was previously the Inspector-General of the navy base in Kuala Lumpur.

The handing over of duties was witnessed by Eastern Fleet commander Vice-Admiral Datuk Syed Zahiruddin Putra Syed Osman.

In his speech, Syed Zahiruddin said the navy had been given the mandate to protect the sovereignty of national waters.

“The navy faces challenges in the form of unconventional threats and cross-border crimes such as robbery and piracy especially in Sabah’s east coast waters.

“Relocating Mawilla 2 from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan last year has enabled operations, training and security patrols in the east coast to be carried out more effectively. We have not seen any incident of trespassing and kidnappings from early 2017 until now,” he said.

Syed Zahiruddin said the increase in navy assets, especially ships from the West Armada to the East Armada, had made it more crucial to develop a new base, given that the current base is now very busy and located too near to the city.

Abdul Rahman assumed the position on Jan 25 last year. He will return to Kota Kinabalu to take over as Eastern Fleet Commander, while Syed Zahiruddin will be assuming duties as the next Joint Forces commander in Kuala Lumpur.
