22 items placed on price control list for Ramadan-Raya period

KUALA LUMPUR: The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry has set the ceiling price for 22 types of food items under the Hari Raya Puasa festive price control scheme.

The ceiling prices took effect on Friday (June 8) and will continue until June 22, about one week before and after Hari Raya Aidilfitri which is expected to fall on June 15.

Ministry deputy enforcement director Datuk Iskandar Halim Sulaiman said around 2,000 premises have been inspected on Friday and so far only one trader was found to be selling over the ceiling price.

"Overall the traders have been following the prices set by us and we will continue to monitor and conduct spot checks nationwide throughout this period.

"Our 2,000 enforcement officers are expected to conduct inspections on about 10,000 premises during this period," he said during an inspection at the Datuk Keramat Market here Saturday (June 9).

He said stern action awaited traders who failed to adhere to the regulations under the scheme, as stated in the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act.

Ministry enforcement and price control officers will conduct regular inspections at public markets and pasar tani.

He added that the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry has assured that the supplies for all the essential items are adequate.

The 22 controlled items are live chicken, standard chicken, super chicken, local beef (uncontrolled in Sarawak and Labuan only), imported beef (controlled in Sarawak only), imported buffalo meat (India), chicken eggs – grade A, B and C, red chillies, tomatoes, imported round cabbage (Indonesia and China, not including Beijing cabbage), whole coconuts (ceiling price at wholesale level only), grated coconut (ceiling price at retail level only), imported shallots (India), imported onions, imported garlic (China), imported potatoes (China), ikan kembung including ikan mabung, ikan aya/tongkol (controlled in Pahang, Terengganu and Kelanatan only), ikan demudok/sagai/cermin/cupak (controlled in Sabah only) and ikan selayang.
