KUALA LUMPUR: Defence and education were among the issues discussed between the Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia Dr Makio Miyagawa and the Council of Eminent Persons (CEP) chairman Tun Daim Zainuddin.
Miyagawa said that trade, investment and culture were the other issues they discussed.
“There are a variety of issues we need to reinvigorate between our two countries.
“Education and defence are very important, as are investment, trade, and culture,” he told reporters at Menara Ilham here Friday.
Miyagawa was in a meeting with Daim for about half an hour. This was the third meeting between these two in two weeks.
He said that he was positive about the future of trade and investment cooperation between Malaysia and Japan.
Apart from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), he said that Japan also saw the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) as another trade agreement that would enhance economic cooperation between the two countries.
“Of course, this is not to replace the TPP, as both are important.
“I have high hopes that these regional trade and investment liberalisation mechanisms have a very good future,” he added.
He however kept mum on whether there would be trade and investment deals to be signed when Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad visits Japan next week.
“It is a little too early to say,” he said.
