KUCHING: Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) must adjust its mindset to being the Opposition at the Federal level after GE14, says its president.
Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said this was necessary for SUPP to keep serving the people and fighting for Sarawak's interest.
“In Sarawak we are still the government and we will continue to serve the people.
“But we also need to change and adapt our mindset very fast that we are the Opposition in Parliament.
“We must remember how to serve the people with an Opposition mindset, to help the rakyat monitor Pakatan Harapan’s performance and their promises to the people,” he said at SUPP's flag-raising ceremony to commemorate its 59th anniversary at the party headquarters here on Monday (June 4).
In GE14, SUPP won only one of seven parliamentary seats it contested through Datuk Seri Richard Riot, who retained his Serian seat.
Dr Sim said the GE14 outcome was an opportunity for SUPP as well as the state government to do some “soul searching”.
“What are the things we do very well that we can continue to do better, what are the areas where we fall short and how are we going to improve this,” he said.
He also said the state Barisan Nasional component parties – Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) and SUPP – must remain united behind the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“For the next three years, we can show people how the Sarawak government can perform even though we are not in the same alliance (as the Federal Government),” he said.
The Sarawak Legislative Assembly's term ends in 2021.
