THE value of housework, more commonly called household production by economists, ranges from 19% of gross domestic product for South Korea, to a high of 53% of GDP for Portugal, 2011 figures from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) show.
Making use of detailed time-use surveys for homemaking activities for 26 OECD countries and three emerging economies, the estimates suggest that between 30% and 50% of all economic activity is not accounted for in traditional measures of well-being.
