KOTA KINABALU: Sabahans of different faiths and backgrounds came together to usher in the two-day closing ceremony of the Kaamatan celebrations on Wednesday.

They marked the closing of Kaamatan, or the harvest festival, by highlighting what Sabahans are best known for: being a melting pot of different cultures.

A glance in any direction at the Hongkod Koisaan in Penampang near here showed locals resplendent in their traditional costumes.

State Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Peter Anthony, who has been tasked with managing the state-level celebrations, said that Kaamatan is emblematic of the harmony and unity that Sabahans enjoy.

He said as Sabah moves forward towards development, there is a need to ensure that its cultural compass, traditions and indigenous identities are not traded away.

"We unite in our diversity. A modern Sabah must retain its character, identity and traditions.
