KLANG: The new Selangor Mentri Besar will be sworn in on June 19.

In a media statement released on Wednesday (May 30), state Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah's private secretary Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani said the ceremony will be held at Istana Alam Shah here.

It added that incumbent Datuk Seri Azmin Ali will also officially relinquish his position as mentri besar on that day.

The mentri besar seat fell vacant after Azmin was appointed to the Federal Cabinet as Economic Affairs Minister.

However, Sultan Sharafuddin directed him to remain in the position until a successor was appointed.

Currently, the top candidates for the position are Sungai Tua assemblyman Amirudin Shari and Seri Setia assemblyman Prof Dr Shaharuddin Badaruddin.

But there is also a possibility that Sungai Kandis assemblyman Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei may be appointed to the position.

Mat Shuhaimi has the necessary experience as he served as Azmin's political secretary since 2014.

He is also Selangor PKR information chief.

If the new mentri besar post goes to either Amirudin or Dr Shaharuddin, the state Pakatan Harapan will have to pick a new exco member who will also have to be sworn in.
