Two drown in flash floods in Kulim

KULIM: A 76-year old retired army man and his daughter drowned in flash floods in Kampung Baru Tambahan here early Tuesday (May 29).  

The deceased were identified as Johari Bakar, 76, and his daughter Nor Sari Danila Johari, 14.  

Kulim Hi-Tech Park Fire and Rescue Department Ops Commander Mohd Hafiz Suhaimi said the two were swept away by floodwaters while attempting to move their car to higher ground.  

He said the station received a call for help at around midnight.  

Mohd Hafiz said three senior officers and 11 firemen from his station and a six-man scuba team from Sungai Petani rushed to the scene to carry out a search and rescue operation.  

"The 14-year-old victim was found among some bushes downstream, about 1.5km from her house at about 7.45am.  

"Her father's body was found in the river behind Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Kob at about 10am," he said.  

Kulim OCPD Supt Nasir Jaafar said the case has been classified as sudden death and the bodies of the victims were sent to the Kulim Hospital for post-mortem.
