Dr Hilmi resigns as Balik Pulau Umno chief

GEORGE TOWN: Former deputy health minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya has quit as the Balik Pulau Umno chief.

This came after he failed to defend his Balik Pulau parliamentary seat in GE14.

In a statement Friday, Dr Hilmi said his deputy Datuk Dr Muhammad Farid Saad will take over as the Balik Pulau Umno division chief.

“I will continue as an Umno member. I will pray for Umno to rise back and continue to defend the Malays and others in the country,” he said.

Dr Hilmi said seeing the Balik Pulau parliamentary seat and its three state seats fall into the hands of Pakatan Harapan was a shock.

“I believe Barisan and Umno had contributed much to the Balik Pulau people and it has developed into a better place.

“A lot of development had been carried out," said Dr Hilmi who was a two-term Balik Pulau MP.

He was also a four-term Telok Bahang assemblyman from 1990 until 2004 and from 2008 until 2013.

The 69-year-old politician, who had never lost since the 1990 general election, was defeated by Pakatan's Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik of PKR by 6,464 votes in GE14.
