KOTA KINABALU: A man was hurt while escaping his burning house in Tuaran near here on Wednesday (May 16) night.
It is learnt that Bernard Giduk, 62, was resting at home at about 7.30pm when he suddenly smelt smoke, and realised that a part of his house was on fire.
He tried to grab some important documents, but turned back to find an exit as the fire was getting bigger.
He managed to escape in time but sustained burns on his back.
Sabah Fire and Rescue Department operations chief Khatizah Rahaban said Bernard received treatment at the scene before he was sent to hospital for minor burns.
Four hours later, in east coast Tawau, at least five families were left homeless when their homes at Kg Merotai Besar were razed to the ground.
No one was injured in the incident.
At 1.16am, the Fire and Rescue Department received another emergency call of a blaze in Kg Bum-Bum, Semporna, where five houses were destroyed.
Khatizah said no injuries were reported.
“Our men managed to bring the fire under control and prevented it from spreading to other nearby houses,” she said.
