PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has arrived in Padang Timur to give his first speech as a free man.
Anwar reached Padang Timur with his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail at about 9.35pm on Wednesday (May 16) night.
His arrival was mobbed by a large crowd of Malaysians and media practitioners who had been waiting since 6pm.
The emcee for the event had to tell supporters and media to calm down, as matters had almost got out of hand at one point.
Fortunately, the situation cooled down about 10 minute after his arrival.
His arrival was also received with loud cries of "Reformasi" while many Pakatan Harapan supporters were seen waving the PKR flag.
Pakatan chief secretariat Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang and PKR vice-presidents Nurul Izzah Anwar and Xavier Jeyakumar were among the prominent Pakatan leaders present.
The 70-year-old PKR leader had walked out of the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital at 11.30am on Wednesday (May 16) a free man after spending a total of eight years in prison over two sodomy charges.
He was finally freed following a full and immediate pardon by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V after the Royal Pardons Board meeting.
Anwar is expected to deliver his first speech as a free man at about 11pm tonight.
