SIMPANG RENGGAM: Political newcomer Dr Maszlee Malik (pic) is hoping to emulate his favourite football club Manchester City to win the Simpang Renggam parliamentary seat.

The 44-year-old academician, who is Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia candidate, supported “The Citizens” after spending four years studying in Britain.

Dr Maszlee, who is also the Manchester City Malaysia Fan Club patron, said Pakatan Harapan and the football team shared a common trait.

“Manchester City’s football kit is light blue, which is the same colour on the PKR flag, which we are using in the elections.

“I’m a huge Manchester City fan and my favourite players are Argentinean striker Sergio Aguero and Ivory Coast midfield enforcer Yaya Toure,” he said in an interview here yesterday.

Dr Maszlee said Pakatan should look at how Manchester City had won the English Premier League title and the English Football League Cup this season and fight to be “champions” in Malaysian politics.

Although he has been in politics for only two months, Dr Maszlee said he is focusing his efforts to reach out to voters here.

“I’m a very optimistic person.

“Being a newcomer, I have to work smart where the human touch plays a greater role in getting support. But, I understand the importance of promoting yourself in the virtual world as well,” he added.
