MARAN: The ruling coalition’s Wanita machinery should “lock and secure” pro-Barisan Nasional voters in their areas before polling day so they are not poached by the Opposition, says Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.

Bernama reports that the Barisan women’s wing chief said women voters must be given attention so that their support would not be swayed.

“The red headscarf (of Wanita Umno) is feared by the Opposition and they know we hold the pro-Barisan voters who can ensure an outstanding victory for us.

“That is why I want the Wanita machinery, especially of Wanita Umno, to always be on the alert for attempts by the Opposition to steal pro-Barisan voters in their care through various means, including going from house to house,” she said at a gathering with Wanita Umno machinery in Felda Dahlia, Jengka 3, here yesterday.

Also present was Barisan’s Kuala Sentul state seat candidate Datuk Seri Shahaniza Shamsuddin, the incumbent.

Shahaniza, who is in a three-cornered fight with PAS and PKR candidates, said she was confident of winning with an increased majority of more than 5,000 votes compared to the 3,293-vote margin she obtained in GE13.

On a different matter, Shahrizat said that DAP’s Lim Kit Siang had succeeded in making Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad a tool for his own political interests and to split the Malays, adding that she was disappointed at the former premier’s willingness to be used by DAP.

“The question is whether Dr Mahathir is doing this just to ensure his son can be the next prime minister without taking care of the country and rakyat,” she said.

“I support Datuk Nawawi Ahmad’s statement that Lim put Dr Mahathir as a candidate in Langkawi as a desperate move to fish for Malay votes.”

Nawawi is the incumbent for the Langkawi parliamentary seat.
