MARANG: PAS will continue its plan of implementing hudud in Terengganu if it wins the state in GE14.

PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang pointed out that hudud refers to mandatory penalties and drew similarities to heavy conventional punishments such as the death sentence and whippings meted out for serious crimes.

“What we need to do is raise the awareness about it because everyone has their own ‘hudud’ and there is no one nation that doesn’t have it,” said the long-time Marang MP after the announcement of PAS GE14 candidates on Thursday.

The Islamist party introduced the Syariah Criminal Procedure Enactment when it gained control of Terengganu in 1999.

The law remained even after Barisan Nasional regained power in 2004.

Hadi pointed out that seminars to help people understand about hudud have been held since 1990.

“I believe more people are gaining an understanding about hudud, which is why we are confident to say that we intend to implement syariah law in general,” he said.

PAS formed the Terengganu government in 1999 after they won 28 out of the 32 state seats in GE10.

However, Barisan Nasional won back the state administration by the same score in GE11.
