Kelantan Forestry Department lodges report over alleged fake news

KOTA BARU: The Kelantan Forestry Department has denied allegations that approval was given to allow new logging projects on a large plot of land following a meeting with the state government.

The Department said it had lodged a police report under the Anti-Fake News Act 2018 over the allegations.

"We would like to stress that no approval was given for new logging project in any new areas as mentioned," said its director Datuk Zahari Ibrahim in a statement Monday (April 16).

"The state government still maintain its record of not giving any approval to open any new logging areas especially involving forest reserves since 2013," he added.

The Department was referring to a statement made by Parti Amanah Negara vice-president Husam Musa on April 14, which was published in several news publications.

Earlier, Husam submitted a memorandum of protest to the state government at Kota Darulnaim.

Husam told reporters that he would obtain a court order as soon as possible to stop the state government from continuing with the projects.

Zahari clarified that the meeting with the state government only involved confirming the minutes of a previous meeting and to implement the decisions made then.

The meeting also reviewed requests from local processing industry players in the state as well as to discuss issues pertaining to conservation and preservation of forest reserves, he said.
