ALOR SETAR: A friendly volleyball match was held in a padi field in conjunction with Pesta Bendang (padi field festival) under a give-back programme in Sungai Tiang. The event was held in Kampung Lubuk Batu from March 8-11. A total 45 of students from Universiti Utara Malaysia, including an exchange student from Osaka, Japan, joined some 400 other participants from the police force, civil defence and local youths to make the community programme a success. — Bernama

A lion dance was part of the performance at the goodwill Chinese New Year celebration held at the Al-Muhsinin mosque in Kuala Lumpur. The get-together was organised by the Muslim Welfare Organisation Malaysia (Perkim). Other activities included fun games for children and health checks. — Bernama
One bus passenger hurt in mishap
KOTA KINABALU: One person was injured when a bus carrying 28 people, including the Miri Football Club team, was involved in an accident at the 34km mark of the Keningau-Kimanis road.
The bus landed on its side at a downhill stretch that cuts through the hilly Crocker Range terrain at about 8.30am yesterday.
The injured man, whose condition was described as not serious, was taken to the Papar district hospital for further treatment, said a Fire and Rescue Services Department spokesman, adding that the remaining passengers, including a child, were unhurt.
The football team was on its way to the capital city for a friendly match. The cause of accident is still under investigation.
Cat rescued from roof of three-storey shophouse
MIRI: The Miri Civil Defence Unit rescued a cat trapped on the rooftop of a three-storey shophouse here following an appeal by its distraught owner.
Its chief Mohd Hazle Shah said his office received a call from Bomba Miri at 9.30am yesterday.
“The owner called for help to rescue the cat which had been on the roof for six days.
“Bomba sought our assistance and we deployed a unit to the scene in Taman Bumiko. We used a ladder to reach it and bring it down,” he said.
The rooftop is about 15m from the ground.
Felda Neram 1 hosts pilot Musang King project
KEMAMAN: Felda Neram 1 has been chosen as the pioneer Felda settlement to carry out the first phase of a pilot Musang King cultivation project with a start-up of 600 trees.
The Musang King durian is a source of new wealth for Malaysians following high demand for its export to foreign countries, especially China, said Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.
“Following a study on the difference of estimated earnings per hectare, apart from Musang King farming, the cultivation of a new pineapple variety, MD2, and coconuts are also new sources of wealth.
“The pioneer project at Felda Neram 1 will become yet another source of income for settlers, apart from oil palm cultivation ... it will also be carried out at five other land schemes, namely Felda Neram 2, Felda Cherul 1 and 2, Felda Seberang Tayor, and Felda Kerteh 5 and 6, which will involve an overall 20ha area,” he said after officiating the durian farm pilot project #sumberkekayaanbaharu at Felda Neram 1 here on Saturday. — Bernama
