PETALING JAYA: Former Bersih 2.0 chairman Ambiga Sreenevasan (pic) has dispelled rumours that she will be contesting in the 14th general election (GE14).
“I am not as brave as Maria Chin,” Ambiga told reporters at a Bersih press conference here Tuesday, referring to Maria Chin Abdullah’s official announcement of her resignation as chairman of the NGO and her candidacy in the coming election.
There has been speculation that Ambiga, a prominent human rights lawyer and former Bersih chairman, will be joining her civil society colleagues Maria Chin and Wan Saiful Wan Jan, the founding chief executive officer of think-tank the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (Ideas), to enter politics.
Wan Saiful resigned from Ideas and joined Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, where he will take on the policy and strategy bureau deputy chairman position, assisting Datuk Dr Rais Hussin.
Ambiga was rumoured to be slated for the Kapar or Segamat seat under the Pakatan Harapan banner.
“I don’t know where these rumours are coming from,” Ambiga said.
Maria Chin will only contest parliamentary seat
