KUALA TERENGGANU: Never in their wildest dreams would newly-weds Azmer A. Rahman and Norasyikinnabila Rahimi have thought that a VIP would grace their wedding reception.
It was a pleasant surprise when they saw Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak walk into the reception hall at the Keluarga Generasi Transformasi Terengganu Baharu (TTB) event at the Terengganu Sports Complex in Gong Badak.
Sharing their surprise and joy were another 110 newly-weds at the mass wedding reception at the same venue.
“I never expected to have the country’s leader at my wedding reception. It is indeed a great honour and something I can tell our future children,” said Azmer, 26.
The weight-lifting coach married his protégé, Norasyikinnabila, 18, who won the gold medal in the women’s 58kg category at Sukma 2016.
The couple looked happy and resplendent in their matching peach-hued wedding attire as Najib sprinkled them with rosewater to bless their union and presented them a mock copy of their marriage certificate.
Najib also handed Azmer a Premium Savings Certificate from Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) worth RM111,000, which will be shared equally among all the couples.
The couples, who hail from Kuala Terengganu, Marang, Dungun, Setiu, Hulu Terengganu and Kemaman, had their marriages solemnised at their respective districts before the mass reception.
Joining in the festivities were about 5,000 of their family members.
Other special guests at the reception included Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman and his wife Toh Puan Seri Halina Zakaria, state secretary Datuk Wan Nawawi Wan Ismail, Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister and Kemaman MP Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek and Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Jailani Johari.
This is the third time the state government has hosted a mass wedding reception, aimed at helping couples bear the cost of their marriage and wedding.
In order to qualify for the programme, at least one of the couples must be from Terengganu, and above 18 years old.
