KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed anti-fake news law will not restrict the people’s freedom of speech, says Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai(pic).

The MCA president said freedom of speech for all would be maintained but comments needed to have basis.

"They cannot criticise blindly, that will result in fake news," he said after Tunku Abdul Rahman University College's convocation ceremony on Friday.

Liow said the new laws would ensure that people who caused fake news to go viral would be held accountable.

"We need to have greater control to ensure that fake news will not offend others or cause an issue among the community," he said, adding that the proposed laws will not stop people from sharing ideas.

He said that the Government has no intention to restrict the freedom of speech of the people adding however, that "there must be responsibility in freedom of speech".
