DAP wants three more Selangor seats, says insider

KLANG: The seat allocation in Selangor is yet to be settled because all Pakatan Harapan parties, including DAP, are demanding for extra seats, says a source from the Opposition.

According to the Pakatan insider, DAP is seeking three additional seats to its current 15 state seats.

“The current 15 seats will remain status quo, with the incumbents defending 14 of them.

“But Selangor DAP wants three more seats for its Malay candidates,” the insider said yesterday.

(DAP will choose a new candidate for the Teluk Datuk state seat as the incumbent assemblyman Loh Chee Heng was expelled from the party in 2016.)

The source said the demands by DAP and Pribumi threatens to reduce the number of seats that will be contested by PKR.

“DAP will win all its current 15 seats, being the strongest party in Pakatan. The party will also probably win most of the three additional seats,” he said.

The source said in the event DAP’s Malay candidates win, the party together with its ally Amanah may combine their seats and demand that they get to pick the new Selangor mentri besar.

Selangor Pribumi chairman Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari admitted there was a rush for the same seats by Selangor Pakatan parties.

“Pribumi is looking to contest in more than 12 Umno-held state seats, and we are asking for some of the seats that PKR did not win,” he said.

He said Pribumi was also eyeing the Tanjong Sepat seat held by PAS.

Dr Xavier Jayakumar of Selangor PKR said it was true that the party’s Selangor seats were in high demand.

“Everyone wants these seats. But PKR is holding firm since the Mentri Besar is from our party. We expect to continue leading Selangor,” he added.

In the 2013 general election, PKR contested 21 state seats in Selangor and won 14 of them. But it lost one seat after former mentri besar and incumbent Port Klang assemblyman Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim became an independent.

Dr Xavier believes PKR can win these seats in the coming general election. Besides retaining the 21 seats it contested in the 2013 elections, Dr Xavier said PKR was also eyeing several additional seats.

There are 56 state seats in Selangor. DAP holds 14 seats, while PAS and PKR each have 13 seats. Two seats are held by Amanah while Umno has 12 seats.
