Mustapa: Declaring emergency claims ludicrous

KOTA BARU: Claims that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will declare a state of emergency to remain in power is ludicrous, says Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.

The Umno supreme council member said this in response to former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s claim that a state of emergency might be declared if the rakyat did not vote in favour of Barisan Nasional.

“Dr Mahathir should stop making such irresponsible claims,” Mustapa said after A- Bio Sdn Bhd and Ain Medicare Sdn Bhd endorsed an MoU involving a RM20mil investment to promote medical biotechnology development in Pengkalan Chepa.

During a recent forum, Dr Mahathir did not dismiss the possibility of a state of emergency being declared if the elections results were not favourable to Barisan.

On a separate matter, Mustapa, who is also the International Trade and Industry Minister, called on the Kelantan government to focus on the necessary infrastructure to attract investments.

He said there would be reservations if there were shortcomings in terms of water quality and supply.

He said Kelantan attracted RM3.1bil in investments between 2013 and 2017.

“The bulk was drawn in 2014 when the state attracted RM1.24bil in investments following the setting-up of a cement factory in Chiku, Gua Musang,” Mustapa said.

“Last year, the state attracted the lowest investment, amounting to RM4.2mil involving small and medium industries.”
