GEORGE TOWN: PAS has a democratic right to contest in Permatang Pauh in the 14th general election, said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

"It will not only be an advantage to Umno but also an advantage to MCA and Gerakan because they will be aided by PAS," he said during a press conference after a cheque presentation ceremony to the Han Chiang University College of Communication here Monday (Feb 5).

Lim was asked about a statement by PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang who said on Sunday (Feb 4) that PAS will be making a comeback in Permatang Pauh by contesting in the coming general election.

Abdul Hadi said that the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat was won by PAS through its former state party commissioner Zabidi Ali in the 1978 general election.

"This is our seat and we will get it back," he said.

PAS held the seat from 1978 until April1982. Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim later won the seat on a Barisan Nasional ticket in the 1982 general election.
