KOTA KINABALU: A man, who was seen walking on top of a car in a viral video, has been described by police as a drug addict with a criminal record.

The viral video was accompanied by a message that said the man had then tried to force his way into another vehicle at the Jalan Pasir roundabout near Likas Plaza here.

The incident occurred at about 5.30pm on Jan 28.

Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm  M.Chandra said the 36-year-old local man was in police custody after members of the public overpowered him shortly after he jumped on the car's roof.

“The man was tested positive for syabu,” he said when contacted Thursday (Feb 1).

ACP Chandra said the suspect was a security guard from Kg Bakiau, Keningau, and had served a one-year jail term for drug offences in Simpang Renggam, Johor, in 1999.

He is also suspected to be involved in car thefts and break-ins with another accomplice who remains at large.

ACP Chandra said the suspect had just taken his dose of drugs when he came out of a car driven by his friend to confront a motorist who had stopped at the roundabout due to traffic.

Unable to get into the locked car, he climbed to the top of the vehicle.

He said police on patrol rushed to the scene after being notified and immediately arrested the man who was held by the public.

ACP Chandra said that earlier on the same day, the suspect and his friend had stolen a Toyota Hilux Double Cab parked along the road in Karamunsing.

Police also seized a car key, two house keys and a black sling bag from the suspect.
