NRD intensifies efforts to combat misuse of personal identification documents

Gabungan Sabah plans new ICs for 'genuine Sabahans'.

PETALING JAYA: The National Registration Department (NRD) in Putrajaya has successfully conducted an operation to prevent and eradicate the falsification of personal identification documents around Kuala Lumpur in the wee hours of Monday (Jan 22).

In a statement on Tuesday (Jan 23), NRD director-general Datuk Mohammad Razin Abdullah said the operation targeted users of false documents in the Segambut and Bukit Kiara area.

“The operation, which began at 12.30am, successfully detained six male and one female suspects, who claimed they were from Sabah,” said the statement.

However, checks and further investigation at the location found that six were from southern Philippines, while another was from Indonesia.

“The suspects were detained for various offences, such as using false identification cards (IC) and using ICs belonging to others,” it added.

Also confiscated from those detained were work passes, bank cards, vehicle grants and international Filipino and Indonesian passports.

According to the NRD, the operation was a result of surveillance and reports from the general public, who encountered the network of syndicate which abused and sold Malaysian identification documents to foreigners.

All those arrested will be investigated under the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007) for using fake ICs and ICs belonging to others as personal identification, which carries a jail term of not more than three years, a fine of not more than RM20,000 or both if convicted.

According to Mohammad Razin, the NRD will continue their efforts to combat the misuse of personal identification documents, especially ICs.
